Knicks Pursuing SG Jamal Crawford and PG JJ Barea

The Knicks' roster for the upcoming season is incomplete and the Knicks are hoping that JJ Barea and Jamal Crawford can help fill the voids.

The Knicks are hoping to sign Barea with some of the cap space that they have left. Barea, who won an NBA Championship with new Knick Tyson Chandler last season with the Mavericks, would be a front-runner for the starting point guard role along with Toney Douglas. Barea is also being persued by the Timberwolves.

The Knicks are hoping to acquire Crawford via a sign-and-trade deal. Crawford, 31, recently rejected a contract offer from the Knicks that would have paid him $2.5 million a year. If acquired in a sign-and-trade deal, he could make up to $5 million per year. Crawford, who won the Sixth Man of the Year Award with the Hawks in 2010, is also considering signing with the Bulls.

I hope that the Knicks can get both Barea and Crawford because they are both capable of being starters and helping the team significantly, but it seems unlikely that they have enough cap space. Both of them can probably make more money on other teams. That being said, the Knicks are a contender and Barea and Crawford both have former teammates that are currently on the Knicks.

If the Knicks can sign both Crawford and Barea, here is how their lineup might look:

PG: JJ Barea* - Toney Douglas, Mike Bibby

SG: Jamal Crawford* - Landry Fields, Iman Shumpert

SF: Carmelo Anthony - Bill Walker, Renaldo Balkman

PF: Amar'e Stoudemire - Jared Jeffries

C: Tyson Chandler - Josh Harrelson (officially signed with the Knicks)
